Introduction to Coaching in
the Perinatal Environment
This one-day, face-to-face workshop offers an engaging introduction to the principles and practice of coaching within perinatal care. Designed for all members of the perinatal team, the programme explores how coaching techniques can enhance communication, promote psychological safety, and strengthen collaborative working relationships across disciplines.
Through interactive discussions and practical exercises, participants will develop confidence in applying coaching skills to real-world practice situations — supporting both student learning and workforce development in line with the Safe Learning Environment Charter, Labour Ward Coordinator Development Framework, and Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment.
Aims
Introduce perinatal teams to the principles of coaching
Develop skills to facilitate psychologically safe coaching conversations
Enable supportive and developmental conversations for students and colleagues
Promote inter-professional working relationships
Embed coaching principles aligned with key national frameworks and standards
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the day, participants will be able to:
Define the principles of coaching
Practise key coaching skills including open questioning, active listening, reflection, and goal setting
Discuss the benefits of applying coaching techniques in practice
Facilitate supportive and developmental conversations with students and colleagues
Build and strengthen inter-professional connections across perinatal services
This course is offered on eight separate dates, providing flexibility for teams to attend.
Accessible to Labour Room Coordinators, Educators across maternity and neonatal services, Neonatal Nursing Leads and Neonatal Coordinators (Band 7 and Band 6).
